FlipVideo:The video gateway drug for still shooters

Somewhere it must be written, “still photographers: thou shalt not shoot video.”

Maybe it’s just me but most of the serious amateur and pro shooters I know don’t shoot video. It seems like a natural evolution of story-telling but for some reason we don’t make the jump.

Speaking for myself, it’s often a matter of equipment. It’s hard enough just to keep the SLRs and accompanying cables, chargers and lenses in working order. Every time I think about adding a new piece of electronic gear knowing that I’ll have to pack extra support pieces stops me.

Until now.

The new FlipVideo camcorders<http://www.theflip.com/> now make it possible for still shooters to painlessly enter the video world. I bought the Mino ($179.00) which is about the size of a candy bar cell phone. The camera records about one hour of 640×480 video at 30 fps. The files are downloaded via an on-board USB plug (also where the camera gets its charge).

It’s no muss no fuss video from camera that lives in your pocket. Also, the Mino looks more like a cell phone than a camera. (Add a little gaffers tape over the red “record light” to become a videographer fly on the wall). This thing is fun.

All this video fun has drawn me toward Nikon’s new D90 <http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25446/D90.html>, the first SLR that shoots HD video as well as stills.

So will we have to take these things out for the airport Xray machine because neither look like video cameras.
