Home brew gear can be tricky at the airport

If you like to tinker and you like to travel with what you tinker with check out this post on Evolution of Security http://www.tsa.gov/blog/2009/03/traveling-with-homemade-gadgets.html

(If you haven’t read this blog by TSA employees you are missing a treat. It is a great example of how an organization can use social media to execute its mission….but I digress.)

The poster (TSA’s Bob) writes about what TSA screeners think when they see homemade devices passing through the airport  X-ray  machine. None of these are happy thoughts. If you’ve packed any wiry, electronic devices that look like they were made in a tiny cabin in Montana I have a word of advise for you. FedEx.

This is of  particular interest to people who travel with lots of heavy, dense electric devices i.e. photographers. I rarely fly with anything that remotely resembles something I might engineer in my garage. This is mostly because the stuff I make rarely works but now I have another reason.

BTW, I wasn’t just sucking up to TSA.  Evolution of Security is a great example of communication best practices. Other organizations should take note.

  1. Judging by the pictures on the website, I am sometimes puzzled what people would stuff into their luggage. Obviously they don’t travel often.

  2. I have to say, nothing surprises me anymore.
